The Law of God

January Letter 2025

I remember taking police training earlier in my life, and I learned a lot in a short period of time. One thing that really caught my attention was that all our laws in Western civilization were all based on the Bible, particularly, the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments were considered foundational and necessary to have a sustainable society, so to remove, relax, or break them could (and would) result in a societal catastrophe. And look where we are today! Amazingly, God wrote the Ten Commandments with His own hand (Exodus 31:18). And I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Jesus Christ became a man to not only free us from sin and death, but to write these laws on our hearts, so that we, too, may have the humility of Christ whom all things were created through. In so doing, He revealed that we have two adversaries: the devil and his demonic forces, and ourselves––our pride and desire for power. God speaks about this problem of pride to the people of Israel when Moses is commissioning them in the book of Leviticus, He says, “And after all this, if you do not obey Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. I will break the pride of your power…” (Lev. 26:18-19).

Thankfully, Christ fulfilled the Law! Through the power of our risen LORD Jesus Christ, He will help us obey His word and His will, and to do His works His way, so that sin, death, and the works of the devil will have no power in our lives––praise God!

The book of Genesis and Exodus covers a lot of time and history. May the LORD help us to hear it and learn from it.
