God introduces Himself to every generation and nation of people in a way that they could understand Him if they would listen. Romans 1 tells us that all men and women are without excuse. They have revelations of God in nature, in the Bible, and from the testimony of Jesus Christ. This month we hear the words of God as He introduces Himself to His own people, called Israel, after they leave the land of Egypt.
The Law of God was given to the people of Israel and Moses was used as a mediator to help them understand who God really was. The Bible records for us how God spoke to a generation of ancient people who for years had lived subservient lives in a pagan and ungodly nation. In Exodus, the plagues were a demonstration of God’s power not only to Egypt, but also to Israel. They all witnessed how the LORD broke the ways of idols and introduced who He was. Leviticus is about the Levites, the priestly tribe, while Numbers is a record of what happened to the children of Israel during the 40 years in the wilderness. Deuteronomy sees Moses retell the Law to the generation who would be charged with going into the Promised Land.
There are two places in the Old Testament where the Ten Commandments are written: Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5. Moses communicates to the people how they should live and what they must do when they take over the land.
Throughout the Bible, we learn about who God is, and through the lens of the work of Jesus Christ we have the advantage of knowing God’s plan of salvation. The real question is will we take the time and effort to listen to God’s messages? Will we be concerned enough about our eternal life to pay attention to the One who created us? God has revealed Himself to us. Let’s spend the time to get to know Him.
